Transguardian - 5-user client (2005 to 2014)

The client’s story

Michael Chan first met Jim Moseley prior to opening MC Computer Consulting, Inc. Michael’s boss from his old job met Jim Moseley at a networking mixer. Jim worked for a division inside of FedEx that was called Declared Value Exception (DVX). Today this department is called Declared Value Advantage. This department handled high value shipments like jewelry that required insurance above the normal standard maximum declared insurance value offered by FedEx.

One of the problems Jim faced working for a big corporation was finding internal help to implement technology that his department required. Everything could be done on a large scale, but no one seemed to be able to help implement one small thing for Jim’s department. The technology that DVX needed more than anything else was a database to track the complicated 20-step sign up process for DVX customers. This included things like meet and greet, informational packets for potential customers, contract review and sign off by the customer and by the FedEx legal department, and many many other steps. It was very complicated to track the progress.

This is where Michael came into play. Jim hired the company where Michael worked. Michael was tasked with the project to implement a GoldMine database to track the complicated customer sign up process. Michael worked extensively with Jim and others on the development of the database prior to Michael leaving to start MC Computer.

After creating MC Computer, Michael contacted Jim. Jim had just left FedEx but was in the process of starting a new company named Transguardian. Transguardian who was backed by Lloyd's of London insured their clients’ high value shipments. Transguardian also developed a application that ran on Windows PCs that allowed their clients to buy insurance for high value shipments at a better rate than offered by FedEx and other carriers. The app also allowed their clients to get quotes and buy/print shipping label from multiple carriers including FedEx, DHL and others. Jim needed some computer support so Jim hired MC Computer to do the work.

Case Study - Application Development and Support

Problem

Transguardian developed their own software platform. The software could be downloaded and installed through the Internet. However, there were some issues related to setting up printers and troubleshooting Windows and software bugs. The developer lived in Fresno and the clients were in Los Angeles and other parts of the country. Jim needed someone to bridge the gap between the developer and his clients.

Solution

MC Computer visited 50 of Jim’s clients during the early versions of his desktop software. MC computer gathered information about the problems the clients were facing and reported back to the developer.

Result

Initially there were a lot of issues. Slowly the software bugs were addressed and eventually ran stable enough that Michael was not required to visit Transguardian’s customers.
